Mayflower 400 Southampton
2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage. This is a very famous journey from the UK to the New World, embarked upon by 102 passengers and 30 crew members, including the Puritan Separatists, also known as America’s Founding Fathers. The Mayflower and her sister ship, The Speedwell, set off from West Quay in Southampton on 15th August 1620.
This journey had many consequences for our world, both good and bad. This year, it is going to be used as a way to acknowledge how this shaped history, reflect on lessons learned, and especially celebrating the many people from all over the world who have chosen to make Southampton their home. Migration will be a key theme in this year’s series of events.
Partners of Mayflower 400 will be displaying and delivering the rich history of the marine city of Southampton through many different formats and platforms. Discover the people then and now, how things have changed and how we can help to achieve a better future.
